The Old Gray House Gift Shop

Mary's Domain

The Old Gray House is not in the business of selling on the Internet. We are displaying some of our products just to give you an idea of what we have to offer our visitors. We only have one product that we try to ship, that is our Hatteras Landmark Series or Gray Gull Collectibles.

Our landmarks are a series of hand-painted miniature replicas of famous and familiar buildings located on Hatteras Island. Each building has a miniature sea gull painted on it. The first product in the series was the Old Gray House. It has now expanded to many others. Some have been retired. We will reproduce the retired buildings upon request.

We are pleased to announce at this time we have a huge selection of large display shells. They are all in excellent shape and reasonably priced. If you are interested we suggest you drop by and check them out before they are all gone. Due to our low prices our inventory of shells dwindles rather quickly.

If you are interested in shark specimens I have a good supply of shark jaws and other sea life. We try our best to provide you with a huge inventory of quality shells at the lowest possible price.

    Nurse Soap Display

This display of homemade soap made for the Old Gray House by our crafter Nancy. Nancy is a registered North Carolina Nurse. We often refer to our soap as Nurse Soap. Soap-making has an extensive history on the Island. In the early days soap-making was common practice among the Islanders. Their soap was boiled in a big kettle over a wood fire and they made it from lye, grease, and ashes. Islanders washed themselves and their clothes with their mother’s and grandmother’s home made soap. Some little boys even had their mouth washed out with soap for using bad words.

Today the soap-making process is similar, but the ingredients are much different. The old-fashioned soap was harsh but our soap today is gentle and has a pleasant smell. Nurse Nancy only uses the most natural healthy ingredients and fragrances in her soap. Her ingredients are all natural, hypoallergenic, and contain no chemicals or sulfates. It is a time-consuming task for Nancy to produce a bar of her gentle to the touch soap. After it has aged properly each bar is hand cut and wrapped with a label describing the fragrance and ingredients. She even has a soap for your dog. One Islander said, “It not only made her dog smell good but it repelled fleas“. We have soothing lotions to match some soap fragrances. Nurse Nancy’s Soap has been well received by the many guests who visit the Old Gray House.

It grieves Dan to see our beautiful Island cluttered with trash. This creation is his way of saying, "Please Don't trash our Island." If you are interested in having Dan create something unusual for you please contact us.
